From Japan to the GCC: The Inspiration Behind ZONO

The story of ZONO began more than 23 years ago, in 2002, during an overseas business trip. One evening, the loofah I had relied on for decades — a Japanese-style exfoliating bath towel — suddenly tore apart. That small accident became the beginning of something much bigger.

For many years, I ended each day by washing my body with a loofah and rich, foamy soap. The gentle exfoliation, refreshing feeling, and deep cleansing always helped me release the stress and fatigue of the day. It was more than a routine — it was a daily ritual of comfort, clarity, and cleanliness.

The next morning, I hurried to a nearby supermarket in the USA to buy a new one. But that was when I made an important discovery.

In the USA, the type of loofah I used simply did not exist.

This was shocking to me. Something I had used every single day — something completely normal in Japan — was not available abroad. It made me realize that this Japanese-style loofah is a unique part of Japan’s bathing culture.

From that day on, whenever I visited different countries around the world, I searched for similar exfoliating bath tools in supermarkets, pharmacies, and convenience stores. Yet no matter where I went, I never found a loofah like the ones we use in Japan.
